Blackberry picking
August 5th, 2008
Saturday we went blackberry picking at Busy Bee Farm down near Pittsboro. Avery quickly caught on about which ones to pick. Surprisingly, he actually put a few in the bucket before stuffing his face with purply-goodness. He was quite a sight to be seen after the picking. Mouth covered in purple, hands covered in purple with juice running down both arms, blackberries all over his clothes. If we’re still here this time next year, we’ll definitely go again, early maybe, so we can get blueberries at the same time.

Avery: …whine, whine, whine!, whine, whine… (flops down on floor, starts a tantrum)
Corey: Avery, use your words.
Avery: Word.

Someone this afternoon asked if I was keeping track of all the words Ave is saying and milestones. My first reaction was no, and I have an empty book and box full of stuff waiting to be put together into an album. Then I remembered the website and realized I should put something up before I forget. He’s actually just in the last few weeks putting together 2 words.
First word: Uh-oh or Dada
- Uh-oh
- Mama
- Daddy
- Up
- Cup
- Truck
- Duck
- Book
- Pig
- Birdie
- Bee
- A-B-C-D-E-O-P-S
- Da (yes)
- poop
- pee-pee
- potty
- eight
- two
- go
- what
- hmm?
- hippo
- baa-baa (sheep)
- fly (butterfly)
- doggie
- cleaning
- vacuum/vac
- plug
- berry
- egg/eggs
- guy
- baby
- bath
- belly
- eye
- bus
- apple
- cookie
- pop (popsicle)
- boom
- aaaww (when giving hugs)
- water
- please
- thanks
- No whining
- all done (puts spoon in bowl and hands it to you)
- mama up
- I’m cleanin’ (copied from daycare kid when sweeping with the little broom)
- mama go/dada go
- ticka ticka ticka (tickle)
We swear we’ve heard him try some curse words (he’s got things ending in -uck down pretty good), so we’ll have to watch what we’re f*cking saying.

Cleaning up a carseat full of puke is the universe’s way of repaying you for all the evil things you did to your parents when you were young.

His first instinct was to eat the blue gooey paint, but quickly discovered the wonders of fingerpaint. I think his highchair yogurt painting experience came in handy. We won’t discuss the red paint all over the feet and floor.
Our first refrigerator art!

Freaking loves the “bocks”. But more than the “bocks” (Lego Duplos), he loves the “guy” as we call him. We need to get some back-up “guys” because he’s going to freak-out when the “guy” gets lost. When I can’t find him, we go around the house calling “guuuuuy!, guuuuuuy!”. Unfortunately, he never makes it easy and answers back.

Can you believe he’s already on his way to 2 years old?!
Last Monday we went for his 18 month check up. The stats:
- Weight: 19lbs, 13 oz.
- Height 32 inches
- Head circumference = 45.5cm.
Never going to hit 20lb consistently. Taking a look at the growth chart, you might notice he’s waaay down below the lowest weight line. That line is for the 5th percentile.
Of course, him being preemie didn’t help, but by now he should have made some progress on catching up on weight gain (by 2 years old caught up). Unfortunately (or fortunately, I can’t really tell anymore) he prefers low-calorie foods over high calorie foods. If given the choice between a blueberry and some ice cream, he’ll take the blueberry without question. This isn’t helping at all. That combined with childhood sicknesses (Hand, foot, and mouth 2 weeks ago, and apparently Roseola this weekend) he isn’t exactly packing on the pounds. The pediatrician ran some tests (blood counts, liver enzymes, electrolytes, thyroid, and celiac disease test). All came out totally fine. Going to check for malabsorption (I won’t tell you the fun details of that), but I’m sure it will be fine. The last remote thing to check for would be cystic fibrosis, which would be unlikely since he has no other symptoms really.
So we continue, trying to maximize the calories with our finicky, fruit-eating, ice-cream shunning, toddler who runs around like crazy burning off every last calorie that enters his lightweight body.
After the doctor’s visit, blood draw, and shots.

June 9th, 2008
Some changes to the site include links to Blip.tv (newer videos) and Youtube videos (older videos) on the right sidebar. In addition to our Flickr photos, these place often get new bits of Averyness even there isn’t a post on the blog. I also added a couple of links for places we go and also a link to the Amazon baby registry which is where we put anything we’re thinking of getting for him until we actually buy it.
The last month as been very busy for us, but hopefully things are slowing down a little so I’ll have a chance to post more. Avery is going for his 18month checkup next week so there will be new stats soon..

He actually says it like that. Sometimes he outdoes himself on the lead in. VvvvvvVvvvvVVvvvVvac! Avery is literally obsessed with the vacuum cleaner. He remembers where it is when the door is closed and can literally entertain himself with it for an hour. When he gets woken up unexpectedly sometimes, he wakes up and says “vac!” which makes me think he dreams about the vacuum too.
Actually, he’s kind of at the age where cleaning seems like a ton of fun because he loves the broom too, and putting things, anything in the trash can (toy or otherwise). He also likes to carry a bag of paper recycling down to the blue bin. He was freaking ecstatic the whole walk to the recycling bin carrying the paper bag, putting the stuff that fell out back in. He copies one of the older kids at daycare and says “i’m cleanin’” while he pushes the broom around. This weekend at the toy store we picked up a kid sized broom and dustpan. At another toy store I’ve seen a vacuum cleaner toy (has a girl on the box of course), but it was almost $30 so I let Ave play with it a while and then passed.
They also had real, but kid-sized rakes, shovels, and hoes, but that seemed like an emergency room visit waiting to happen.

He really likes the blueberry and cheese danishes from Guglhupf.
Friday there was a crazy thunderstorm with marble sized hail. Saturday started with a trip to the strawberry farm, brunch at one of the daycare kids house, lunch with friends at weaver street, surprise going away party for a friend in the afternoon, followed by a temporarily quiet mommy and daddy coffee break while the little man slept. He was all tuckered out after all the playing with other people’s toys and dancing to show off at the surprise party. Sunday started out with running up and down the hallls at Carr Mill followed by breakfast at Guglhupf in Durham and a lazy day until a graduation party for a friend. Avery throughly enjoyed all of it and we discovered two things: 1) he is really outgoing and 2) he like to get down and boogie.
First kiss :)

Sunday we went to the playground at the farmer’s market after watching the water baloon tossing contest at Carrboro Day. We ran into Shauna and Miles, whose spot we snagged at our daycare last year since she decided to stay home. Miles is about the same age as Avery. Both of us moms ran around making sure there were no head dives off the play structure or getting run over by the bigger kids. We were talking about the daycare (Miles is coming to our daycare in August this year) when we noticed that Avery and Miles faces were very close together. I was almost afraid Avery was biting him or something. They were kissing! I’m pretty sure there was tongue since they are both open mouth slobberers. Avery just learned how to kiss and apparently Miles had just learned too. They figured they’d test it out. It was so cute! I only wish I’d gotten a picture! This is the type of photographic embarrassment that would come in handy when he’s 16..
Arcade Fire on the Carrboro Town Commons
May 5th, 2008
Friday we went to the Change Rocks/Obama Early Vote concert, where Arcade Fire and SuperChunk played. Please excuse the people in front of us but this is the best picture I got while toddler wrangling and trying to enjoy Arcade Fire. Time to get some kid ear muffs for future events like this.
